ThoughtWorks announces Early Access of Twist, Automated Functional Testing platform
- Twist enables business users and technical professionals to work together to create test suites of lasting business value and impact; Early Access offers progressive software teams a first glimpse of the next-generation of testing tools -
Bangalore, San Francisco, London — 29th September 2008 — ThoughtWorks, the global IT consulting and software company, today announced the immediate availability (in Early Access mode) of Twist, an automated functional testing platform and the latest addition to their Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) suite for software teams. For the first time, business experts, testers and developers (i.e., everyone on a project team) can collaborate to write high quality software aligned with business intent and needs.
Twist drives the development of lasting and re-usable test suites that are easily maintainable throughout the software development lifecycle – allowing businesses to get the maximum return on the investment they make in building test suites. It enables business experts to define acceptance criteria in English-like language, increases tester productivity with a powerful editor and gives developers early feedback on product quality.
Chad Wathington, VP – Product Development for ThoughtWorks Studios said, "ThoughtWorks has been at the forefront of building complex business critical systems for the last 15 years. We’ve learned that many teams lack the tool support, know-how and business collaboration required to accomplish testing effectively, even though it is a crucial part of the development process.”
Wathington added, “Twist helps teams build automated test suites in a language their business users understand. It allows everyone in a team to engage in the testing process while ensuring that production software meets business requirements. The Twist Early Access offers progressive teams an early glimpse of the next generation of functional testing tools.”
Twist is designed by ThoughtWorks, creators of the popular open source web testing framework Selenium. It provides a rich environment for authoring, executing and maintaining large test suites. Twist improves team productivity dramatically with powerful Integrated Development Environment (IDE) features, like refactoring, html reporting, and automatic code generation.
Twist is the third commercial software product in the ThoughtWorks (ALM) suite. Mingle, an Agile project management application launched in July 2007, is already on its third major release, and is being used by more than 90 companies globally. Cruise, the continuous integration and release management system was released in July 2008.
ThoughtWorks is offering a free 60-day trial of the Twist Early Access (on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux) in a beta mode. With prices starting at $2,500 for teams of 5, it is affordable for entire project teams, not just testers. Software teams will be able to purchase Twist licenses at those prices when Twist launches in the coming weeks.

ThoughtWorks releases Cruise, Continuous Integration and Release Management System
- Building on 10 years’ insight and success with CruiseControl, Cruise lowers software deployment risk with fully automated, auditable builds -
Beijing, London, Chicago — 28 July 2008 — ThoughtWorks, a global IT consulting and software company, today announced the general release of Cruise, a continuous integration and release management application that enables Agile development teams to release software with a new level of confidence. By enabling fully automated, auditable deployments, Cruise lowers the risk associated with releasing complex applications. It is aimed at software developers, testers, Information Systems professionals and project and program managers. IT Directors will also recognize the advantages of the product as the time of their development teams is freed up to focus on technological innovation that benefits the organization as a whole as well as the addition of meaningful features.
Jez Humble, product manager for Cruise said: "ThoughtWorks has years of experience helping customers rapidly deploy working software into production. Cruise embodies the lean continuous integration and release management techniques we have developed to serve our clients.”
Humble added, “Releasing software need not be a painful, time-consuming and error-prone process. Cruise’s simplicity, scalability and unparalleled power gives teams control over their build, testing and release processes, so they can focus on delivering great software to their users. With this platform, teams of all sizes and skillsets can now benefit from Agile software practices."
Cruise is designed by ThoughtWorks, creators of the open source application CruiseControl, the original continuous integration system. Cruise addresses gaps in other product offerings such as lack of support for splitting a build into multiple related stages and zero configuration build clouds. Cruise introduces the powerful concept of pipelines, which make it simple to manage and test changes in an application from check-in through deployment. For the first time, software teams can go live with new, tested features quickly and consistently.
Cruise is the second commercial software product in the ThoughtWorks suite. Mingle, an Agile project management application launched in July 2007, is already on its third major release, and is being used by more than 75 companies globally.
ThoughtWorks is offering a free 30-day trial of Cruise (on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux), following which it will remain free to use for teams requiring two or fewer software agents. In addition, Cruise will be available at reduced or no cost for most open source projects, academic institutions and non-profit organizations.

ThoughtWorks Enhances Leading Software Project Collaboration Tool with Release of Mingle 2.0
Major Release Raises the Bar on Global Collaboration and Program Management;
Introduces Card Trees™ to Visually Simplify Project Complexity.
CHICAGO— April 15, 2008—ThoughtWorks, Inc., a global IT consultancy, today announced the release of Mingle 2.0, a major upgrade to the company’s powerful project collaboration and management software application. Mingle 2.0 helps software teams deliver globally distributed projects effectively, and program managers handle complex projects efficiently.
“The IT industry has long grappled with two vexing issues – how to deliver effectively with globally distributed teams, and how to bridge the communication gap between business and technical teams”, said Cyndi Mitchell, Managing Director of ThoughtWorks Studios, the division of the company that developed Mingle. “Mingle 2.0 addresses both issues elegantly, and goes a long way towards delivering on ThoughtWorks’ vision of revolutionizing the IT industry.”
One of the most significant features of Mingle 2.0 is the introduction of Card Trees™, a groundbreaking feature which gives software teams the ability to see the “forest” as well as to dive into the details when necessary. Using Card Trees, project managers can visualize all tasks for a large, complex project, and work with the team to break it down to manageable card hierarchies.
Other new features in Mingle 2.0 include:
- Cross-project reporting and one-click visibility at any level of detail - program, project, requirement or even team member.
- The ability to track key metrics across projects and ensure adherence to compliance requirements.
- Application Program Interfaces (APIs) and plug-ins to easily integrate Mingle with existing project infrastructure.
“Mingle’s flexibility has allowed us to track and organize resource allocation, as well as prioritize and execute all our work, from defects to high-level business initiatives,” said Stephen Brown, Director of International Online Operations at OVE.com, the largest online wholesale vehicle marketplace. “We are excited about the 2.0 release as it will give us the ability to further connect the dots, and keep the business engaged at all levels of the organization.”
Mingle 2.0 is being released a mere nine months after the initial launch of Mingle. In that short span of time, Mingle already has an active user base in the thousands, with major corporate customers including 3M, Sungard and McGraw Hill.
Mingle 2.0 is available for download immediately. For a free 30-day trial visit
